What to Expect in a Newborn Photography Session

Welcoming a new baby into the world is a life-changing experience, and capturing those early days with professional photography is a beautiful way to preserve these precious moments. If you're considering a newborn photography session, you might be wondering what to expect. As a professional newborn photographer, my goal is to create a relaxed, enjoyable experience for you and your baby while capturing timeless images you’ll cherish forever.

About Me

I'm Clare Barker, the owner of Clare Barker Photography, a specialist newborn photography studio based in Garforth, Leeds. With years of experience in capturing the delicate beauty of newborns, I’ve created a warm and welcoming studio environment where families can relax while I create stunning, timeless portraits. My approach is baby-led, ensuring every session is calm, safe, and enjoyable for both baby and parents. I also offer Maternity, Family, and Cake Smash photography, helping families document their little one’s journey from bump to baby’s first birthday.

When to Book Your Newborn Session

Newborn photography sessions are best scheduled within the first two weeks of your baby’s life— ideally between days 5 and 14. During this time, babies are typically sleepier and more curled up, making it easier to achieve those beautifully posed shots. Many parents book their session during pregnancy to ensure availability, as slots can fill up quickly. However, if your baby has already arrived and you haven’t booked yet, don’t worry! Get in touch, and I’ll do my best to accommodate you.

Preparing for the Session

To help your session go smoothly, here are a few things to consider:

  • What to Bring: Extra nappies, milk (if bottle feeding), a dummy (if used), and any sentimental items you’d like to include in the photos, such as a special blanket or soft toy.

  • What to Dress Baby In: Loose-fitting clothing is best to avoid marks on their delicate skin. Many of the portraits will be taken with the baby wrapped or undressed (while keeping them warm and comfortable at all times).

  • For Parents: The studio is kept warm to ensure your baby remains comfortable, so dress in light layers. If you’re planning to be in the photos, neutral, soft-toned clothing works beautifully.

What Happens During the Session?

Newborn sessions are completely baby-led, meaning we follow your baby’s cues and take breaks as needed. Here’s what you can expect:

  • The session typically lasts between 2 to 3 hours, allowing plenty of time for feeding, soothing, and gentle posing.

  • I use a selection of soft wraps, blankets, and simple props to create a natural, timeless look.

  • Your baby’s safety is my top priority. Every pose is done with care, and I ensure that your little one is comfortable at all times.

  • If your baby needs extra time to settle, that’s absolutely fine! There’s no rush, and I work at a pace that keeps them content.

Family & Sibling Involvement

Including parents and siblings in the session is a wonderful way to capture the love and connection within your growing family. If you have an older child, I recommend bringing along a small toy or snack to keep them occupied when they’re not in front of the camera. I’ll guide you through natural, heartfelt poses to ensure your family portraits are as beautiful as your newborn’s solo images.

A Relaxed, Enjoyable Experience

I understand that adjusting to life with a newborn can be overwhelming, which is why I strive to make the session as stress-free as possible. My studio is a calm, welcoming space where you can sit back, relax, and enjoy watching your little one’s first portraits come to life.

If you're expecting and would love to capture these early moments, I’d be honoured to welcome you to my studio. Feel free to get in touch with any questions or to book your session—I’d love to hear from you!
